Chromium and Blood Sugar: What the Studies Actually Show
Chromium trials in type 2 diabetes used 200 to 1,000 mcg a day. A 2019 review of 58 trials found small drops in fasting glucose and A1C, and the clinical meaning was unclear (NIH ODS: Chromium). The American Diabetes Association does not recommend chromium for glucose control (ADA Standards of Care 2026, Section 5). Sugar Reset prints 0.7 mcg per 1 mL serving.

The basics
What is chromium, and why is it sold for blood sugar?
Chromium is a trace mineral your body needs in tiny amounts. It is sold for blood sugar because it seems to help insulin do its job.
The Daily Value for adults is 35 mcg (NIH ODS: Chromium). Chromium picolinate is one common form, and it is the form printed on the Sugar Reset label.
The sales page says the formula can "promote healthy insulin function". That is marketing. The label itself only says "Promotes Metabolic Balance". The real question is whether extra chromium, on top of food, changes blood sugar in people with diabetes.
The numbers
How much chromium did the diabetes studies use?
Between 200 and 1,000 mcg a day, roughly 6 to 29 times the Daily Value.
| What | Chromium per day |
|---|---|
| Sugar Reset, 1 dropper (1 mL) | 0.7 mcg (2% DV, as printed) |
| Sugar Reset, 2 droppers | 1.4 mcg |
| Daily Value (adults) | 35 mcg |
| Typical chromium-only supplement | 200 to 500 mcg, some up to 1,000 |
| Type 2 diabetes trials | 200 to 1,000 mcg |
Chromium figures come from the NIH fact sheet (NIH ODS: Chromium). Study doses for gymnema (LiverTox: Gymnema), African mango (Ngondi 2009 (African mango trial)) and forskolin (NIH ODS: Supplements for weight loss) are for one ingredient taken alone. Each one alone is close to or above the 400 mg that 2 droppers give for all 22 blend ingredients together.
The results
What did the chromium trials find?
They found small drops, and nobody is sure those drops matter. A 2019 review pooled 58 trials in type 2 diabetes (NIH ODS: Chromium). Fasting glucose and A1C came down a little on average. The NIH calls the clinical meaning unclear.
Another NIH center read the same field and saw a mixed picture. Chromium "may be able to provide some benefit", it says, but the research shows conflicting results (NCCIH Clinical Digest: Type 2 diabetes and supplements). Doses ranged from 200 to 1,000 mcg, and many trials were small and short.
The guideline
Does the American Diabetes Association recommend chromium?
No. The ADA Standards of Care 2026 say chromium and herbal supplements are "not recommended for glycemic benefits" (ADA Standards of Care 2026, Section 5). If your doctor shrugs at chromium, that is recommendation 5.16 talking.
On the label
How much chromium is in Sugar Reset?
Each 1 mL serving has 0.7 mcg of chromium. At the label's top amount of 2 droppers, that is 1.4 mcg a day.
The lowest trial dose, 200 mcg, is more than 140 times that. So the trials say nothing direct about this amount.
In fairness, chromium is the one ingredient with a printed amount. The other 22 share a 200 mg blend. Gymnema and Panax ginseng are in there, but their amounts are not published, and no study of Sugar Reset exists. Can chromium interact with diabetes medicine or thyroid pills?
Yes, at supplement doses. The NIH says chromium may add to insulin and other diabetes drugs, raising the chance of a low (NIH ODS: Chromium). It may also cut how well you absorb levothyroxine, a common thyroid pill.
The 1.4 mcg in Sugar Reset is far below the doses behind those warnings. The unknown amounts of gymnema and ginseng are the bigger reason to show your doctor the bottle.
Shaky, sweaty, confused, a pounding heart, or a reading under 70 mg/dL: take 15 to 20 grams of fast sugar and recheck in 15 minutes. Seizures or passing out need 911 (NIDDK: Low blood glucose).

Before you buy
What should you ask your doctor about chromium?
Do I need more?
Most people get enough from food. Ask whether your history suggests a gap.
Should I check more?
On insulin or glipizide, ask whether to test more often for the first weeks.
What about the blend?
Point to gymnema, ginseng, guarana and the licorice compound on the label.

FAQ
Chromium and blood sugar FAQ
Does chromium lower blood sugar?
Only a little, if at all, in studies. A review of 58 trials in type 2 diabetes found small drops in fasting glucose and A1C of unclear clinical meaning (NIH ODS: Chromium). NIH reviewers call the results conflicting (NCCIH Clinical Digest: Type 2 diabetes and supplements). Those trials used 200 to 1,000 mcg a day.
How much chromium is in Sugar Reset?
The label prints 0.7 mcg of chromium, as chromium picolinate, per 1 mL serving. That is 2% of the Daily Value. At the label's top amount of 2 droppers a day you get 1.4 mcg. It is the only ingredient with its own printed amount.
How much chromium should a diabetic take per day?
No dose is recommended for blood sugar. The ADA says chromium is not recommended for glycemic benefits (ADA Standards of Care 2026, Section 5). The adult Daily Value is 35 mcg, and diabetes trials tested 200 to 1,000 mcg a day (NIH ODS: Chromium). Ask your doctor before taking more than food provides.
Is chromium picolinate safe with metformin?
Ask your doctor first. Chromium may add to the effect of insulin and other diabetes drugs and raise the chance of a low (NIH ODS: Chromium). Many people take metformin with glipizide or insulin, which can cause lows on their own, so those combinations need the most care (NIDDK: Low blood glucose).
Can chromium affect thyroid medicine?
It may. The NIH fact sheet says chromium may lower the absorption of levothyroxine (NIH ODS: Chromium). If you take a thyroid pill, ask your pharmacist whether to space it apart from any supplement, drops included. Do not change your prescription timing without asking.
Can 0.7 mcg of chromium do anything?
Nobody has tested it. The amount is far below the 200 mcg lowest trial dose and below the 35 mcg Daily Value (NIH ODS: Chromium). No study of Sugar Reset as a whole has been published, so its effect on blood sugar is not known.
