The basics
What is gymnema, and why is it in Sugar Reset?
A climbing plant from India whose leaves are used in Ayurvedic practice.
Gymnema sylvestre is a leafy vine. Extracts of its leaves are sold for blood sugar, and lab and human studies show they can lower glucose somewhat (LiverTox: Gymnema). That is why it turns up in so many blood sugar formulas.
The Sugar Reset sales page goes further than the research. It says gymnema reduces sugar absorption in the gut and helps rebuild the cells in the pancreas that make insulin. The second part is a disease-style claim, and we found no human evidence for it (LiverTox: Gymnema). Rules for supplements treat claims about a disease as drug claims (21 CFR 101.93 (structure/function claims)). The label makes no gymnema claim at all.

Dose check
How much gymnema is in Sugar Reset?
Not printed. Label order still sets a ceiling: 25 mg per serving at most.
Blend ingredients must run from most to least by weight (21 CFR 101.36 (proprietary blends)). Gymnema is eighth, so the seven ingredients above it each weigh at least as much. Eight equal shares of 200 mg is 25 mg. Gymnema cannot be more than that, and it is probably less, since 14 more ingredients share the same 200 mg.
| Scenario | Gymnema a day | Share of 1,200 mg |
|---|---|---|
| 2 droppers, the most gymnema could be (label order) | 50 mg | About 4% |
| 2 droppers, if all 22 shared evenly | About 18 mg | About 1.5% |
| 1 dropper, if all 22 shared evenly | About 9 mg | Under 1% |
| Typical study dose: 400 mg three times a day | 1,200 mg | 100% |
The whole daily blend at 2 droppers is 400 mg. One studied gymnema dose is three times that, before any of the other 21 ingredients get a share.

Does gymnema work for blood sugar?
Mild drops in fasting glucose in small trials. A benefit for diabetes has not been shown.

What studies show
What did human studies of gymnema find?
The NIH's LiverTox reference sums it up. Human trials of gymnema leaf extract found mild decreases in fasting glucose, but effectiveness for diabetes is not shown (LiverTox: Gymnema). The typical dose in that research was 400 mg taken three times a day.
| Sales-page line | What the evidence says |
|---|---|
| Reduces sugar absorption in the gut | Glucose-lowering effects were seen; how much at Sugar Reset's amount is unknown |
| Helps rebuild insulin-making cells | No human evidence found; a disease-style claim |
| (Not mentioned) Liver safety | Rare liver injury reported, likelihood score D |

Can gymnema cause low blood sugar with diabetes medicines?
It can add to them. That is the main reason to talk to your doctor before a first dose.
Gymnema lowers blood sugar, so it can stack on top of insulin, sulfonylureas such as glipizide or glimepiride, and meglitinides (LiverTox: Gymnema). Those medicines can cause lows on their own (NIDDK: Low blood glucose). In Sugar Reset, chromium and Panax ginseng sit alongside it.
Take a 66-year-old man on glimepiride and metformin. If he adds the drops, his doctor may ask for extra meter checks in the first weeks, especially before driving. That plan comes from the doctor, not from the bottle. He keeps every medicine exactly as prescribed.
Shaky, sweaty, confused, a pounding heart, or under 70 mg/dL on your meter. Eat or drink 15 to 20 grams of fast sugar, recheck in 15 minutes, then call your doctor before the next dose. Seizures or fainting: call 911 (NIDDK: Low blood glucose).
More on this in gymnema and low blood sugar.
Liver
Is gymnema bad for your liver?
Liver injury from gymnema is rare. The risk may be higher at large doses or with liver disease.
LiverTox gives gymnema a likelihood score of D: a possible, rare cause of liver injury (LiverTox: Gymnema). Sugar Reset also contains green tea extract, which carries a stronger liver warning, score A (LiverTox: Green tea). If you have liver disease, ask your doctor before trying the drops.
Yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, pain in the upper belly, or tiredness that is new and unusual. Stop the drops and see a clinician. Bring the bottle (LiverTox: Green tea).

FAQ
Gymnema in Sugar Reset: common questions
How much gymnema is in Sugar Reset?
The label does not print it. Gymnema is eighth of 22 ingredients in a 200 mg blend, and blends are listed from most to least, so it can be at most 25 mg per 1 mL serving, or 50 mg a day at 2 droppers. The real amount is likely lower.
Does gymnema lower A1C?
The NIH LiverTox reference says human trials found mild decreases in fasting glucose, and that effectiveness for diabetes has not been shown. Those studies used about 1,200 mg a day, far more than Sugar Reset can hold. No study has tested the drops on A1C.
Can I take gymnema with metformin?
Ask your doctor first. The NIH lists insulin, sulfonylureas and meglitinides as the usual causes of lows, and many people on metformin also take one of them. Gymnema can add to those. Your doctor may suggest extra glucose checks. Never stop or change a prescribed medicine to make room for a supplement.
Does gymnema really stop sugar cravings?
Gymnema is often sold for that, but the NIH sources we use do not cover cravings. They report mild fasting-glucose drops at much higher doses. Sugar Reset makes no cravings claim on its label, and the amount in a dropper is not published.
Is gymnema safe for the liver?
Liver injury from gymnema is rare. LiverTox rates it a possible cause, score D, with more risk at high doses or with existing liver disease. Sugar Reset also has green tea extract, a better-known liver risk, so people with liver disease should ask a doctor first.
Can gymnema rebuild the pancreas?
There is no human evidence for that. The Sugar Reset sales page says gymnema helps rebuild insulin-making cells, but that is a disease-style claim a supplement may not make, and the NIH reference we cite does not support it. The bottle label makes no such claim.
