Supplements and Diabetes Medicines: How to Check Before You Mix Them
Some supplements lower blood sugar, raise blood pressure or change how drugs are absorbed. With insulin or glipizide that can mean a low (NIDDK: Low blood glucose). NIH experts warn never to replace diabetes care with an unproven product (NCCIH: Diabetes and dietary supplements). Before adding Sugar Reset, show your doctor or pharmacist the full label and keep every prescription as written.

The short answer
Can you take supplements with diabetes medicines?
Sometimes, but only after someone who knows your medicine list has seen the label.
The FDA does not approve supplements before they are sold (FDA: Q&A on dietary supplements). Many hold more than one active plant. Sugar Reset lists 23 actives. A few may lower glucose. Others touch blood pressure, heart rhythm or how some drugs are cleared.
Take a 48-year-old woman whose checkup showed an A1C of 6.1%. She takes no medicine yet, so her main question is caffeine and blood pressure. A 61-year-old on metformin and glipizide has a sharper question: could this add to a low?
Medicine by medicine
Which Sugar Reset ingredients matter for which medicines?
Match your own list against the left column. Amounts inside the blend are not printed.
| If you take | Label ingredients to ask about | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Insulin, glipizide, glimepiride, meglitinides | Gymnema, Panax ginseng, chromium | Each may lower glucose; these medicines can cause lows (NIDDK: Low blood glucose) |
| Metformin | Same three | Often paired with glipizide or insulin; check your whole list |
| Blood pressure or heart medicine | Licorice compound, coleus forskohlii, guarana | Glycyrrhizin can raise blood pressure and upset heart rhythm (NCCIH: Licorice root) |
| Some statins, nifedipine | Grapefruit extract | Grapefruit can raise blood levels of these drugs (FDA: Grapefruit juice and drugs) |
| Levothyroxine | Chromium | May lower absorption; see our chromium research summary |
| Corticosteroids | Licorice compound | Interactions reported (NCCIH: Licorice root) |
Digoxin, blood thinners and immune-suppressing drugs also have notes. The full list is on Sugar Reset side effects.
The hard line
Can a supplement take the place of metformin or insulin?
No. In 2021 the FDA and FTC warned 10 companies selling supplements with diabetes treatment claims (FDA/FTC warning letters on diabetes supplements). The FDA said people who use such products instead of proven treatment could be harmed.
The Sugar Reset sales page has a headline about managing type 2. The label claims only "Promotes Metabolic Balance". It is a dietary supplement, not a diabetes treatment.

What should you watch for after starting?
- Lows: shaky, sweaty, confused, or under 70 mg/dL. Take 15 to 20 grams of fast sugar and recheck in 15 minutes (NIDDK: Low blood glucose).
- Jitters, a racing heart or poor sleep: guarana and green tea are caffeine sources.
- Higher home blood pressure readings: ask about the licorice compound.
Never stop or lower a prescribed medicine on your own. If something feels off, stop the drops and call your doctor. For fit by health situation, see who Sugar Reset suits.

FAQ
Supplements and diabetes medicines FAQ
Is it safe to use blood sugar drops while on metformin?
Ask your doctor first. Gymnema, ginseng and chromium on the label may lower blood sugar. Metformin is often paired with glipizide or insulin, which can cause lows on their own (NIDDK: Low blood glucose). Keep metformin exactly as prescribed; Sugar Reset does not replace it.
Can Sugar Reset cause low blood sugar with glipizide?
It could add to a low. Glipizide is a sulfonylurea, a class that can cause lows (NIDDK: Low blood glucose). Sugar Reset contains ingredients that may lower glucose, in amounts that are not printed. Your doctor may ask you to check more often when you start.
Is Sugar Reset safe with blood pressure medicine?
Ask first. The blend includes monoammonium glycyrrhizinate, a licorice compound that can raise blood pressure and upset heart rhythm, even in small amounts for people with heart or kidney disease (NCCIH: Licorice root). It also contains guarana, a caffeine source, and coleus forskohlii.
Can supplements interfere with insulin?
Some can. Ingredients that lower glucose may add to insulin's effect and raise the chance of a low (NIDDK: Low blood glucose). NIH experts say supplements may interact with medicines and should never replace diabetes care (NCCIH: Diabetes and dietary supplements). Share the full label with whoever manages your insulin.
Should I stop my diabetes medicine if I take Sugar Reset?
No. Never stop, skip or lower a prescribed medicine because you started a supplement. Sugar Reset is not a diabetes treatment, and in 2021 the FDA and FTC warned companies whose supplements claimed to treat diabetes (FDA/FTC warning letters on diabetes supplements). Any change belongs to your doctor.
Does grapefruit in Sugar Reset affect statins?
It might. Grapefruit can raise blood levels of some statins, such as simvastatin and atorvastatin, and the blood pressure drug nifedipine (FDA: Grapefruit juice and drugs). Sugar Reset lists grapefruit fruit extract 11th in its blend, with no amount printed. Ask your pharmacist.
