Prediabetes First Steps: What to Do Before You Reach for a Supplement
Start with your care team, not a bottle. Ask what your number means, when it will be rechecked and what changes to food, movement and sleep they suggest. The NIH says there is not enough evidence that any supplement can help manage or prevent type 2 diabetes, and Sugar Reset has never been studied. If you still want to try it, show your doctor the label.

The diagnosis
What should you do first after a prediabetes diagnosis?
Slow down and talk to your care team. Prediabetes is a warning light, not an emergency, and your first moves should come from the people who ran your test.
Picture a 48-year-old woman whose checkup shows an A1C of 6.1%. Her doctor calls it prediabetes. That evening a video ad promised a drop that would "reset" her sugar. She almost ordered on the spot.
Her better first step was a list of questions for her doctor. A number on a lab sheet only makes sense next to your history, your weight, your family and your other results. Your doctor can explain all of that. An ad cannot.
Step by step
What are the first four steps for prediabetes?
Scroll through four steps that cost nothing and keep you in charge.
- 01
Learn your number
Ask which test you had, what your result was and what it means for you. Write it down.
- 02
Set a recheck date
Agree on when the test will be repeated. That date is your real checkpoint, not how you feel in week one.
- 03
Pick one habit
Choose one change your care team suggested, such as a walk after dinner, and keep it for a month.
- 04
Ask before adding anything
Show any supplement label to your doctor before the first dose, and keep any prescribed medicine as directed.
Habits that fit real life work better than a perfect plan you drop in week two. Our blood sugar habits guide has practical ideas for meals, walking and sleep to talk over with your doctor.
At your visit
What questions should you ask your doctor about prediabetes?
| Ask | Why it helps |
|---|---|
| Which test did I have, and what was my result? | Different tests measure different things. Knowing yours lets you compare like with like next time. |
| When should we recheck? | It gives you a clear date to work toward. |
| Should I check my glucose at home? | Your doctor will say whether home checks help in your case. Follow that plan, not an ad's. |
| Which one change matters most for me? | Food, activity, sleep or weight: your doctor can point to the biggest lever. |
| Do any of my medicines affect blood sugar? | Your full medicine list belongs in the picture. |
| Is it safe for me to try a supplement? | Bring the label. Your doctor can check each ingredient against your health. |
The evidence
Can a supplement help with prediabetes?
Not according to the best summaries we have. The NIH's complementary health center says there is not enough evidence that any dietary supplement can help manage or prevent type 2 diabetes (NCCIH Clinical Digest: Type 2 diabetes and supplements).
The American Diabetes Association goes a step further. Its 2026 Standards of Care say chromium and herbal supplements are not recommended for blood sugar benefits (ADA Standards of Care 2026, Section 5). The NIH also warns against replacing proven care with an unproven product (NCCIH: Diabetes and dietary supplements).
None of that means a supplement is dangerous for you. It means a bottle should never be your plan. If you still want to try one, our guide to choosing a blood sugar supplement shows what to check first.

How can you spot a misleading blood sugar supplement ad?
Disease words
Ad wording such as "manage type 2" is a disease claim. A supplement may not make one. In 2021 the FDA and FTC warned 10 companies over diabetes claims (FDA/FTC warning letters on diabetes supplements).

Where does Sugar Reset fit if you have prediabetes?
Sugar Reset is a dietary supplement, not a treatment for prediabetes. The bottle claims only "Promotes Metabolic Balance". No study of the product exists, and the one printed amount, chromium, is 0.7 mcg per serving.
The label itself says that anyone with a known medical condition should ask a physician first. Prediabetes is a reason to have that talk. Two of its ingredients are caffeine sources, and if your doctor later adds a medicine that lowers glucose, the conversation matters even more; see supplements and diabetes medicines.
If you and your doctor agree to try it, treat it as an extra, not a swap, and judge it at your recheck. Check who Sugar Reset is for first.
Know the signs
When should you call your doctor right away?
Strong thirst, peeing much more often or blurry vision need medical care soon, not a supplement. Call your doctor's office the same day.

FAQ
Prediabetes and supplements FAQ
What is the first thing to do after a prediabetes diagnosis?
Talk to the doctor who ordered your test. Ask what your result means for you, when it will be rechecked and which single change matters most. Write the answers down. That plan comes before any product you see in an ad.
Can supplements reverse prediabetes?
No supplement has been shown to do that. The NIH says there is not enough evidence that any dietary supplement can help manage or prevent type 2 diabetes, and the American Diabetes Association does not recommend chromium or herbal supplements for blood sugar.
Is Sugar Reset good for prediabetes?
Sugar Reset has not been studied in anyone, with or without prediabetes. It is a dietary supplement whose label claims only metabolic balance. If you want to try it, show the label to your doctor first and keep your recheck date.
Do I need to check my blood sugar at home with prediabetes?
Only if your doctor asks you to. Your doctor may rely on lab tests at set visits instead. If you do check at home, write each reading down with the time and bring the log to your next appointment.
Should I tell my doctor I take a supplement?
Yes, always. Bring the bottle, not a photo of the ad. Your doctor can look at every ingredient, including caffeine sources and herbs that may affect blood sugar, and weigh them against your health and any medicines.
How do I know if a blood sugar supplement ad is honest?
Watch for disease words such as reverse or manage type 2, which supplements may not use. Also watch for countdown timers and hints that you can drop a prescription. Honest sellers show the full label and tell you to ask your doctor.
